We can sometimes get back to notrump after we bid spades..but we will almost never get back to spades if we bid notrump. As to hand valuation, it is silly to argue that our diamonds are wasted in spades....I once knew a partner who doubled 1♦ holding a diamond honour, and unless I am playing against David Berkowitz, who hates leading AK, that may be the lead if I declare spades.
