Bidding 3-card suit at 3 level

GIB N's hand was something like Kxx x AQxxxxx xxx, I was dealer, and I think the auction was:

2♣ 2♥ 3♣ 3♥
3♠

3♠ was explained as 4+♠ 4+♣. I passed with ♠Axx, figuring it would be better to stay at the 3 level with a 4-3 fit rather than go to the 4 level with minimum values. Although I had a feeling a disaster was coming, because GIB took a long time to come up with the 3♠ bid.
