the irony was not missed here, jilly...but you also questioned your own 1S rebid, and I --as well as others--think the 1S rebid was very well judged. The two actions should not be even barely compared to one another. Yours was very good, the pass of 1S was very wrong.

Oh yeah, irony, the 5th suit - sorry - appears I held a void again!

why does North think he is suddenly captain after 1?

How about just opening your best suit? The fact that it is clubs and you have a huge hand makes this a no-brainer imo.
and the result can be plotted on a graph.

maybe, she considered 1D to be more prepared. And, which minor was opened seems a bit irrelevant on this one.

Kathryn I think it is instructive in general when someone at Han's level gives you advice to think about what he says and why it might be better to open 1C instead of 1D on this hand (and why it has some potential downside). He didn't spell it out but there are many benefits to opening 1C with very strong (41)44 hands.

Ok, I will spell it out. You still get to clubs if partner has clubs (which you won't over a 1D opener), 1C-1D is now a very good auction for you, and if for some reason the opponents end up declaring some number of hearts doubled you certainly want a club lead, not a diamond lead.

On the downside if an auction gets competitive (they bid hearts) and you double, partner will often be endplayed into hoping you have 5 clubs (after all, you opened 1C). There are even auctions where he would be scared to mention his 5 card diamond suit and instead would take a preference to his three card club suit. This is especially true if in competitive auctions you don't play 2N is some kind of scramble for the best strain. Also it is a general theme that opening a type of hand (4-4 minors in this case) with two different bids depending on your judgment is not good, because it makes both of those auctions harder.

In general it is good advice to any aspiring bridge player to not only follow expert advice (like open 1D with 4-4 minors in general) but think about that advice (like whether or not you should open 1D with 4-4 minors on this particular hand). You will find your game progresses much faster this way.

You would have gained the ability to say "How could you pass?! You have a fit for both my suits!"

Roger, I doubt that I can be accused of not listening to advice given, I would think that I am guilty of taking advice given by BBO "Experts" too seriously. The question here was what went wrong in this auction, not which minor 44 suit should I open. Given the hand again I would bid it the same way, without discussion my pickup bbo partner will expect a minimum of 5 clubs if the auction starts 1C:1D 2D

I will talk to my r/l partner about this hand, perhaps it is a "no brainer" to open QJ84 ,AKQ6 hands 1, thanks for the explanation.

I would open this hand 1 diamond too, the downsides with such a strong hand are too small.

An increasing number of people nowadays play transfers after 1 Club and have a much better defined system after 1 club then over 1 Diamond. This would be the only reason for me to open as many hands 1 club as possible.
Kind Regards

Roland

Besides what Roger pointed out, there are two more benefits to opening your best suit: If you open clubs, partner will devalue club shortness. If you open diamonds, partner will devalue diamond shortness. Obviously, it's better when partner devalues club shortness (and with his actual hand partner has an even more obvious 2 bid after the auction 1C-1H-1S).
The other is that in case there is a slam, showing your best suit is even more important, as you always need good trumps to play slam (so for slam purposes it is more costly to lose a fit in your best suit than to lose a fit in another suit).
