Umm I will never pass inquiry in posts, hence my undertitle (inquiry-1). That's why I post on PhantomSac now when I am 1 post less than inquiry.

Josh will pass him soon though.

Wow what happened to that plan? I didn't follow BBF much for a few weeks and now I don't even know whether Jdonn or Jlall surpassed inquiry first!

Jdonn passed inquiry by a lot, so I felt comfortable passing inquiry too.

Darnit, he was going to be my buffer. You could definitely be #1 if you wanted, in fact you are if you add jlall + phantomsac + jlol.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

2.5 feels right. Agree with TimG about where different abilities fall, but if you wanted to use masterpoints as a determinant ( :) ), you can rely on this: MP Distribution.

If we want to call someone below 500 points "intermediate or worse" that would include +/- 70% of all players.

It does depend on what happens in the play. It just depends on keeping count like if the opener had 6, 4 and 3 then it would only be a 2.5 level difficulty contract. Counting isn`t as difficult as an endplay.

In a 300-750 strata at an ACBL Regional, I'd expect about 20% to get this right. In a 750-1500 strata, I'd expect 80% to get it right. So, I called it an advanced play.

Wow, way too much faith in the 750-1500 strata!

It very well may be that I'm putting too much faith in the 750-1500 strata.

So, putting this response together with your original post:
To me beginner is like, take a finesse or whatever, so I doubt any hands you post will be below a 2. I guess this one is a 2.5

sounds like you are saying that a player of advanced/intermediate skill (a 2.5)should get this right, but it would not be routine for the 750-1500 strata, so that strata is something less than an advanced/intermediate field of players.

I don't mean to challenge that position, just want to be sure I don't misunderstand.

And yes, the masterpoint system is silly, but that's all we have in this part of the world.

I think theres a big difference in the forum definition of beginner/int and the ACBLs. There is also a big difference in the ACBLs definition compared to the entire bridge population.

I mean for instance someone with 5 MP is probably an advanced player compared to most of the world which just plays party/social bridge. But in the ACBL they're probably a beginner. Likewise someone with 1500 MP is an advanced player in the ACBL, but most would probably struggle with "intermediate" hands here.

IMO very few players get to the point where they can knowingly do a squeeze. Even in the general ACBL population. You could say that makes them all intermediate, and you could likewise say that every hand Ben posted here was expert + or whatever, neither of those would be very useful for their purposes though.

But since MP are something tangible, I'd say that thinking that 80 % of people with 750-1500 points can look at a hand at trick 1 and then knowingly execute a squeeze and endplay is reallly overestimating that group. It's important to remember that on the forums most of the people are at the very least expert at solving problems, and the general population definitely is not.

I think you are way overestimating the difference between 300-750 and 750-1000 MPs.

Btw, while we are having fun with Masterpoints: I wonder whether I am the only ACBL player who isn't a Regional master (requires 50 MP + pigmentation requirement) but is eligible to play the Platinum pairs.
"Are you saying that LTC merits a more respectful dismissal?"

Were you one of the Silver Strikers of the early 1990s? They refused to play Sectional tournaments when the silver point requirement was first implemented. Some of them remained NLMs and played in NABC NML events with upwards of 1000 points, before ACBL changed the eligibility rules for those events.

And a obligatory re-emphasis on my :o

Hope I didn't imply anything more than a loose correlation between points and talent. I think there's more of a correlation than people on here like to admit, especially for those under 40 or so.

The fact is we all know folks with less than 50 MPs that can execute a squeeze and those over 5,000 that couldn't if it bit them on the ass.
