I think second seat preempts should be "classical" even w/r.

2D.

Depending on your preempt style, a preempt promises ta most -3 or -4 down.
If you play at most -3, I would say, you have to pass, if -4, you have a fairly
sound 2D, and since you are in 2nd seat, your preempts should be basically
rock solid book bids, ... but even 4 tricks are slightly optimistic, but you cant
have it all.

If 2 ♦ is a weak two, why do you ask? OF course you can ask whether it is better to play 2 ♦ as something else, like a very weak 5 card suit, or as a two suiter.
But if you explain 2 ♦ as a weak two (6 cards) with 6-9 HCPS and some stuff in the suit, this hand is close to prototypical.

I open this 3 ♦ my standard partner would pass- both of us have no 2♦ weak two avaiable.

I am really sound in second position latelly, so I might even pass this if 2♦ is not avaible.

If its avaible its a quite normal 2♦ bid

By the way, with my regular partner I would have to choose between 2C (weak with diamonds or strong) and 3D, I would go with 3D.

Wow I must be getting old or something. I've never seen a clearer 2♦ bid in my life. I would bid 3♦ if I had a 7th ♦, though!

2♦ is an absolutely normal bid. I think 3♦ just donates going down too often in second seat, 2♦ already gives them more problems than people realize. Besides what are the arguments for 3♦ > 2♦ that don't also apply to 4♦ > 3♦?

Frankly I want to mention I have seen it be wrong to 'overpreempt' in 1st or 2nd seat on a hand that is 'normal' for a certain preempt so many times that I'm fully convinced it's a loser. I think this is something that even some experts really overdo. Favorable vul doesn't mean you avoid making normal bids when you have them.

Why would I open this 3♦ in 2nd seat when I have 2♦ available? If I had to choose between 3♦ and pass, I would at least consider (but ultimately reject) 3♦, but surely there's no reason to go crazy here. The strong hand is 50/50 to be partner's, why do I want to lie to him? 1st seat fav, yeah I might jack it up another level, and I'm sure I would in 3rd seat.
