Opp on the third spot open 1 you hold:

Kx
AQx
AQxxx
xxx

and bid:
The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

x, spades too weak for 1NT, diamonds too weak for 2 (sort of). if you have 2 in their major and 5m332 it's much better to double.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

I picked X, too. One short of overcalling in them and NT didn't even cross my mind...

1NT. Like the position of my aces, K and I have a possible source of tricks. Not happy with some of the responses I might get over X either. RHO opened in 3rd seat and I'll try describe my hand as good as I can.

Double for me. I wouldn't consider anything else. I hate to wrong side NT with marginal strength and takeout shape.

Easy 1NT here. Accurate shape/strength description, a support for hearts if pard transfers, source of tricks in diamonds, which is also a convenient escape suit if they dbl.

What more could you want?

I think double is so much better than 1NT here that 1NT wouldn't cross my mind. 1NT describes your hand better, but double is much more likely to work better, and that is way more important.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

1N would cross my mind, but only accompanied by a horrified shudder. Double seems clear...too much to pass, and the thought of bidding 2 makes 1N seem almost palatable.

This hand doesn't pass the boundary X/1NT.
But if S-K10x? Or H-Axx? Or D-AQJxx?
Tipped to 1NT then?

Hi,

Hi there.

Ok yesterday noon I posted the very same question at Croatian bridge association forum and get very different answers.

X - 2
1NT - 13
2D - 7

Like we are not playing the same game.

If you ask me it is not very clear what to bid. Or far from clear cut at least. With 1 NT you describe best the shape. Unfortunately not very good stopper. I do not like X because no HP in xxx clubs but I agree as well this describe the shape but w/o stopper. And I would prefer in the rest of the suits better shape from 353, at least 344 or even 4 hearts. For 2D you are short for a card and will have problem to find possible heart fit.

I was thinking which bid can reduce the damage. Any bid can get you in trouble. None can tell what can be the cheapest contract if partner have nothing. Very probably you will run from 1NT double in 2D even not more secure. If partner have something he will not pass that we can miss the game.

If you expect that you will be overbided with 2S your 2D bid helps partner to bid 3D to fight for a contract.

I bided 2D. I do not say it is good, but at the moment seemed the best to me.

After all, I want to stress the very big differnce in opinions from this one and our local bridge forum.

Hi,

I think there is a difference, if it comes to making 1NT overcalls, I would say,
Europeans, make lighter 1NT overcalls than players from North America, and
the BBF is heavily dominated by players from North America.
The consequence of making heavier 1 NT overcalls is of course, that players
from North America are more in favour of making a T/O with bal. hands, ...,
of course of shape double is a italian style things, so my logic is not 100% clean,
but hey, who said, that arguments need to be consistent.

One more thing for everybody: any difference if VUL or not?
