X and then lead a ♠ if it gets passed out. I don't think that interpreting the X as a responsive X makes sense in this situation.

There's a small risk that they will find a ♣ fit if N finds a XX for the rounded suits...

I would play 2 ♦ as natural, but I would not bid it, obvious double, showing 4 spades and the willingness to earn 500+.

I wouldn't play 2♦ as natural here. I think it shows at least invitational values without five hearts, but usually with four hearts. I don't see why it should be different from
  1x dbl pass 2x

In both cases:
- We may have a game on.
- Advancer may well need to explore major-suit fits.
- The auction says that it's unlikely that we'd want to play in opener's suit.
- With a hand that does have length and strength in opener's suit, there is usually a sensible alternative action.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Yep double. We have both RHO's suits well under control.

Ditto. Their being vul and the temptation of +200 (if not a lot more) cinched it.

or the willingness to learn what a somewhat uncommon score, -160 actually represents , for the entire lay-out was the following:
Scoring: MP

(♠ holding in the OP was from memory, this is the actual hand)

West passed 1♠ X instead of bidding 2♣ and it was -160 shortly thereafter. We had company though, -160 was worth 31 MP on a 77 top.

That was a strange 1♠ bid, why skip hearts if he is going to bid another suit? Oh well, tough hand to go plus on our way.
