Scoring: IMP

I was sitting south.

The bidding are folowing:
W---N---E---S
2H P P 2S
P 3S P 4S
P P X P
P P

My partner think taht my 4S bid was too aggressive while I think his 3S is a clear overbid. What are your opinions?

Thanks ahead.

3S was an atrocious bid.

No ruffing values
Ace of Hearts is largely wasted.

You partner should have passed and then apologized for such a bad dummy.

I agree that 4S is somewhat agressive.

KQJ tight in clubs doesn't pull full weight.
The Queen of Hearts is likely to be worthless

I'd probably pass. With this said and done, you should have never had to make this decision.

I wouldn't bid 3S with those North cards over a direct seat 2S overcall, much less in the actual case. I don't find your 4S all that agressive. North wouldn't have raised a direct seat overcall to 3S with Jxx Kxx xxx xxxx, but this is comparable to his raise of your balancing bid.

Frist, welcome to the Bridge Base online forum.

When one balances, one is bidding not only the cards one holds, but also the expected cards your partner holds. Your partner 7hcp are fully evaluated in your 2 bid, and he has no call other than pass.

Playing bridge lose ho did last mistake. Last mistake is 4, do this is losing overbid. Why? Because 3 is not inv raise, N can bid 3 cue with that hand. Was 3 right bid? Yes, despite few hcp, because they are perfect for contract: fill in and side A. It is true that A will be better to be in side suit and will be nice to have some distribution, but life is not perfect... Distribution can have your partner... It is true also, how posted Ben, that from reopen position p count some hcp in your hand, but not such perfect hcp... And if from reopen position he have 2 suiter, most of pairs difficulte menage such hands (look meta overcals here in forum)

I don't think so... It is normal to play raises after a preempt as constructive (like 3 here). A 3 bid, though hinting at a spade fit, doesn't necessarily gurantees it. North can have, say, Kx xxx AQxx KJxx, for such a bid.

Your bids look fine to me and 3s is horrible.

Both sides overbid a little, the 3 I can have sympaty for, since I firmly believe in rasing wih fit. And souths 4 is not that bad either, but like I said both sides stretched a little.

I personally agree with inquiry here: partner holds what you were playing him to hopefully have when you bid 2.

3S is an overbid. North has only 3 card support, a 4333, and no help for the minors where help is probably needed. Considering that 2S was a balancing bid, North has no call here.

Since a jump over a weak-2 is strong, South has extras for the simple 2S bid and is justified in bidding 4S. If North has as little as QJxx x xxxx Axxx, 4S has no problem.

South is unlucky that North is not short in hearts as expected.

South is close to a minimum for balancing 2S, North should not even dream of raising with horrible 4333 and wasted values, and he should probably pas even a jump bid to 3S by the balancer.
