Scoring: MP

3♠ - 4NT
5♣ - ?

5♣ = Zero keycards

What is the modern trend?
Should we still bid slam/grand slam even though 2 keycards are missing?

do the modern people like to go down in slams? I don't think so :) Just because people like to open/overcall more often and bid games a little more aggressively they do not automatically bid every slam that could conceivably make.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Yes. I wholeheartedly suggest bidding grand slams off two key cards. It is quite the modern trend. But, tend to do it against me only.

And we ask police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and citizens to enforce or abide by it? The legislature continues to write unreadable statutes. Gibberish should not be enforced as law."

Think about how the bidding may have gone at other tables
I bid 4NT rkcb, perhaps others did not
Had I received a 5♠ response, I would have bid 7NT

Hi,

you basically answered the question as you bid 4NT.
I doubt that one can up with a reasonable 3S preempt, that makes sure,
that 7S is on, so asking for key cards makes only sense, if you wanted to
decide between 5S, 6S or 6NT.
You got the worst answer, 5S.

By the way, I would view BBO tournaments as training for the real world,
and would not bid differently playing BBO tournaments, than playing in the
real world, but that is just me.

With kind regards
Marlowe

As I recall there is no benefit for bidding what at best a 50% slam [basically assuming a club void offsets Kxx♠ onside ]

Pretty sure GIB will open 3♠ at every single table.

Your humble modern opponents are bidding 4N on this hand.

The wise ones will signoff. Others will blast slam. Sometimes it makes if pard has a singleton club or the A♣ is on and the spade finesse is working and RHO doesn't have K-3rd.

I wish bridge was always this easy.

I'd sign off...Who says partner has QJT? IF he just has QJ you lose to stiff K onside as well as Kxx. If he has QT you are just done.

It is very easy to take a pessimistic view, and imagine hands where slam will fail
The big problem is that many will bid 3♠-6♠ or 4♠-7♠ in BBO Land

If partner is 7222 with 2 or 3 queens, slam could still make especially if you avoid a club lead. A red suit lead is more likely
If, however, partner has better shape then slam is much more likely to make than fail, so should we just follow the herd and bid it anyway?
Out of 58 tables, 36 bid slams and 22 bid games. Only 6 slams failed - mostly bid in 6NT or 7NT, or very bad play in 6♠

Partner was 8-1-3-1 with all 3 queens, and to add insult to injury most failed to find the club lead and ♠Kx sat under the Ace, making 13 tricks
My 5♠+1 scored a miserable 27%

2 pairs actually made 7♠ (but I do not recommend bidding it)
