Imagine how much this woman would "save" if she would use her skills and the time in a job.

Presumably she has a lifestyle she is happy with and can in this way maintain. I'm not sure why you seem to think she should go out to work to make money ... so that sometime in the future she can stay home and not have to work? :P

To answer Phil first:

It's a free country, she can do what she wants, I won't judge that.

I was refering to the title of the thread (bad economy? maybe this can help). What I see is a woman who is:
- skilfull
- creative
- spending a whole lot of time on this

What she gets out of these is free groceries.

As an amateur economist, I would think that if she would use the same time, same skils and same creativity professionally, she would get wages that would pay for her groceries, her mortgage, her car, a family vacation and possibly health care too.

Once again, she is free to do what she wants and I don't want to judge that. It just seems to me that she could use the resources that she has more efficiently. But I will be the last one to interfere with her freedom to choose what to do with her skills and time.

Just to be clear, the woman in question is serving as the primary caregiver to four kids.

She certainly has the option to shove all the kids in day care and get a "real" job. For whatever reason, she has decided not to. Even I'm not going to be arrogant enough to state that its sad that she has made the wrong decision.

Playing around with coupons is something that can be done on-the-fly, using small segments of free time. Most jobs don't offer this same flexibility in scheduling.

I don't know about the USA but a single mother with 4 kids does not really have the option to get a job good enough to actually have a good life.

As you say, most jobs don't have much flexibility in scheduling, something that you probably need with 4 kids.

BTW it is really incredible that this actually works. In Germany you almost never can combine coupons, and if you get $5 off something, that something is rarely below $20.

IIRC, the beginning of the story said that she spends a couple of hours a week on this. If she spends two hours and saves $200, they's a great return on her time. Where's she going to find a job that will pay her $100/hour (I have a decent high-tech job and I'm earning only a quarter of that) and still allow the flexibility to raise a family?
