2 = invitation+ with club fit
Dbl = Heart fit, penalty, decent hand
Pass = minimum, no heart stop, probably balanced
Rdbl = extra values (GF), asks partner to describe hand further (e.g. bid 2NT with a half-stop)

2=good raise
x=interest in competing in hearts (2 would be NF, 2 would be diamonds and a good hand)
pass=I have a bad hand without extra club length
xx=I have a good hand with no good natural bid to make (CANNOT BE PASSED)
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

X=waste of time allowing all those other tools to the opening side. With a desire to compete in hearts, compete in hearts.
