If partner may open light in 3rd seat then 3♥. Conversely if you are opening light in 1st and 2nd then 4♥

With a five-trump limit raise I like to be in 4, but also like partner in on the fact that I don't have a strictly preemptive bid, in case pard is strong. Drury followed by game, unless I can describe a 5-card raise with stuff. I can, but you won't like how. (1NT forcing by passed hand, then 4H). In order to do that, you have to redefine some other passed hand actions, so that 1N can be forcing, not just semi-forcing. For instance, no drury, and no comic 3rd-seat openings.

Hi Kathryn

Many people use 2NT by a passed hand to show a limit raise + with 4+ card trump support.

Drury is also reasonable

For what its worth, I like the hand and the fifth trump. However, I'm not sure whether this is a completely clear cut game force.

I would not GF this hand because if partner does not accept an invite I rather doubt we can make 10 tricks.

Whatever my methods are to invite I will use.

right on, unless you want 2nt by passed hand to be unusual for the minors. lots of choices on how to handle passed hand actions, nothing is perfect, but definitely an area of discussion prior to play, and if perish the thought. partner's 3rd seat is comic, maybe the LOTT still paid off.

I don't follow the law (and opp probably only have 8-9 trumps anyway) and would treat this the same as any other limit raise, either Drury, 2NT or your preferred method.

In this situation the 5332 shape doesn't really add much compared to 4432. Some minimum openers will produce game but you have little chance opposite a fairly normal hand such as xx AQxxx Axx Kxx which has everything working and is a maximum to refuse an invite. IMO partner will go on a large percentage of the time when game makes.

Just make your systemic bid to show a good raise.

4♥ is a bad bid because your partner will think you have a different hand type altogether.
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

Ok, Im just adding Drury to the list of conventions I forget.

After P (P) 1M I can show;

2♣ limit with 3 card support
2♦ limit with 4 card support

Partner opens light 3rd seat, so after 1♥:2♦ 2♥ I should respect the signoff or can I bid 3♥ to show the 5th ♥? Not good enough to GF, too good for a limit.

Drury is quite commonly forgot, sometimes even by both members of the pair on the same board!

With your hand I'd raise 2♥ to 3♥, which to me doesn't show necessarily an extra heart but instead just says "no seriously partner, are you sure you can't make game" but it depends a bit on your 1st seat openers, your 3rd seat openers, and what partner will bid 2♥ with.

Yes I'd raise 2♥ to 3 also.

What Kathryn describes is known as 2 way reverse Drury.

To me responders hand is only a decent limit raise with 5332 and 10 hcp with 2 tens.

Another possibility over the 2♥ s/off is to make a black suit game try.

Also if PD can open real junk in 3rd seat, you may be set in 3♥ but then the opps may balance anyhow.

When I pick up a hand like this and partner opens Im thinking SLAM. I see I need to remove my blinkers, think about the hand partner could have an involve pard in the decision process. Drury seems like a good tool to add. I'm making a lot of mistakes at the moment by over valuing my hand and bidding like I dont have a partner.

You have a balanced 10 count. A 5-5 fit doesn't add that much playing strength when both hands are balanced. 10hcp+12hcp = 22 hcp. Write down some 5332 hands with 12 hcp for partner and see how often game is cold.

If playing a weak 2♦ opening I think it's fine to use 2♦ as Drury and 2♣ as natural. The responding hand is narrow enough that you don't need an extra step after 1♥-2♦. I don't know why more people don't do that. Maybe somebody can explain.

Hi,

I would sell the hand as a limit raise with 4 card support.
10-12 with 4 cards, is fairly good description of my hand.

You have 5 card support, but you have a bal. hand,
and the most likely shape for partner is also a bal. hand,
i.e. the risk that you will have mirror shapes is not low,
it is nothing too worry to much, but should keep your
exitement in check.

As a general remark: The point count is a good evaluation
method for bal. hands, and since you have a bal. hand, you
should simply trust the point count, trying to be smarter than
the point count is possible, but not if it comes to evaluating
bal. hands.

With kind regards
Marlowe

tough one:

a bit too much in terms of hcp for a Bergen 4d bid.....but it is very close.

I guess I would choose option two which would be 3c....8-11 support pts and 4h or 3d...limit raise(12-13) with 4......even by a passed hand
