We are Green vs. Red? 5C.
Partner wont have any defence, against 4S, i.e. 4S will
make, I have 2-3 tricks for partner, I can raise the
level by 2 tricks.
Unfortunatly the spade shortage is not a plus, because
partner will have also at most 2 spades.
If partner is allowed to bid at little insane facing a passed
hand, Pass is the better option, because 5C is agressive.

Should have chances to beat 4S, and will usually go for 500, possibly 800...pass.

I agree with pass. Even though there will certainly be times either doubling or bidding was right.

The options, IMO, should be pass and 4NT, not 5♣. I think in this sequence that 5♣ suggests a club lead (or no care) whereas 4NT suggests "something else."
That said, I pass. A favorable preempt to 3♣ by partner after I passed initially could be sick beyond recognition.

The trend is to make wide ranging overcalls. The downside is obvious: Now you have the (last) guess whether you should defend or not.
In your example 5 club had been a good save opposite a 7 card suit, because then they had made 4 spade in comfort. This is even true, when partner had lesser clubs.
Live with this occasional losses and be happy to be able to preempt quite often. Or play like they did in the 70s and have well defined preempts.

yes but it is somewhat unfair to assume that the missing club transforms into a non- heart. of course this is starting to sound like Butterfly Effect. More to the point: on the two given hands 5cl only wins if hearts are 5-2 and clubs 3-1, which isnt a winning bet 500 is a lot.

With such a balanced hand I'm almost always passing.
Especially being a passed hand, where partner's preempts might be quite wide ranging. 4♠ can easily go down, though, more often, the save costs too much.
