I hope you're talking about 3NT. I say why not?

WTP. Even if you don't think 3NT is going to be your best spot you can't have a good auction to any other contract. Pass risks all pass, lose 6 for +200/-430 or so,* and other calls imply more playing strength at a suit contract.

While you wait apprehensively to see if this is a unanimous poll ...

Lets assume that partner does make the outrageous bid of 3NT ...

Now what sort of hand would you pull?

Minimum strength and distribution please.

I think it's a problem. It would be disappointing to go down in 3NT opposite Axxx x Kxx AQxxx, and almost as disappointing to make it by finding K onside. 3NT is the best spot opposite AJxx x xxx AQxxx, but 5 is better opposite Axxx x Jxx AQxxx.

For 3NT to be clearly better when partner is unbalanced, partner has to have solid clubs and a problem elsewhere, eg xxx x Kxxx AKQxx, Axx x xxxx AKQxx or Jxx x Jxxx AKQxx.

3NT is also better than 5 if partner is balanced and has a loser elsewhere, eg AJxx xx KJx KQxx, where we'll probably lose a heart ruff and two aces. However, the balanced hand doesn't seem very likely, with ten or eleven hearts already know to be in two of the other hands.

An advantage of supporting clubs is that it will get us to slams that we'd miss otherwise, eg Axx x Kxxx AKQxx.

All in all, this decision seems fairly close to me.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn
