On a recent online play I received this hand:

♠Q5
♥A975
♦65
♣AJ852

Bidding goes like this:

OPP1 ME OPP2 PARTNER
Pass Pass 1♦ Pass
Pass 2♣ Pass 2NT
Pass ?

Some Marty Bergen fans (like me ;) ) would open my hand but (unfortunately) that day I didn't and decided to wait for further developments. After my 2♣ balancing bid, my partner came up with a 2NT bid. What now? What 2NT means for you on this bidding ?

2NT means that partner thinks we might be making 3NT if my hand is maximum.
Since my hand is maximum (for some , more than maximum :) ) I will accept, though maybe 3♥ is better than direct 3NT , since we might belong in 4♥.

3NT.

Partner invites to game facing a passed hand, I have a max.
I accept the invitation.
If you want a number for partner, he showes 13-15HCP, a bal.
hand and a diamond stopper.

With kind regards
Marlowe

PS: 3H is better than 3NT.
With kind regards

Hi pigeon

3♥. As a passed hand couldn´t be a reverse :)

My guess is pard had an opening balanced hand with Diamonds and decided to pass at his 1st turn. 2NT is a weary and good bid, because you could have bid 2 Clubs with less then your good 11 pts.
So, nothing to lose bidding 3Hearts "en route" to 3NT, trying to catch a possible Heart fit.

3♥, although 3NT is reasonable.
Yay for the "Ignored Users" feature!

3N is simply lazy, there is no reason not to check for a 4-4 heart fit.

3H. Passing is gross and there is plenty of hands where 4H is better than 3Nt.
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

3H. Can't see any reason to bid anything else.

You're certainly forcing to game and playing with a pickup partner, a natural 3H bid seems most sensible. But what about 3D?

With a bit more discussion it makes sense to use 3D as a major inquiry (on a hand like this) which leaves 3H to be used on very shapely hands (with serious interest in a different strain). Of course the meaning of 3D/3H is easily reversible.

LHO opened the bidding - not partner.

What does 2NT mean? For me it means I am going to bid 3NT

I think lazy is the perfect word to describe 3NT as opposed to 3♥. Or it means this hand thinks his partner is terrible.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.
