I'd move opposite an 8-10 raise, specially if palying bergen (and 4 card support is possible)

Thanks all. The voting favors pass, which is what happened at the table.

I posted this because it was a BBO teams board and the result at both tables was 2 +4 (!) for +230 and a push board.

Cant see whats wrong with bidding 3 help suit game try.if P has 9 points in M or 4 or short game could have reasonable play .and if he doesnt 3 couldnt be too dangerous a level.
Wish 2 of the passers here whose comments i value had been more informative.

Well, the dummy is pretty much max, has heart values for declarer, and just about everything that could sit right in the opps hands does so.

Playing the way I do (with an outlet for strong two type hands and therefore responder doesn't need to say anything with crap), then I think this is a clear game try hand. However, playing standard, I would be nervous holding opener's hand - a game try could be right - and we could be down in three sometimes I think - so I have sympathies with those who would pass.

Informative: Bad trumps = danger. 3 is likely to be very dangerous.

Sometimes you miss a not-vul game which makes 6 on 3 out of 3 finesses, two 3-2 breaks in important suits, and the wrong lead! Notice that if you simply remove the jack of spades from dummy, partner would probably bid game over the game try on his 8 count with QJx of your suit, and now game is absolutely awful and even 3 is down a ton of the time.

Switch the north and south hands, and E/W lose 2 more tricks.

If clubs split anything but ideally, OR opening lead is a diamond, the diamond loser becomes unavoidable (given best defense, which I don't think is too hard to find.)

It's not just the J, either. Lose the J or the T and you lose another trick, I think.

Oops, just reread jdonn's post, and I think I plagiarized him.
Still decidedly intermediate - don't take my guesses as authoritative.

I really wonder why Josh is passing. Maybe he is getting old.

YOu have 15 HCps, two doubeltons and just aces and supported kings. You have just 6 losers, what do you need more for an invitation? The only downside is the bad trump suit, but with Aces and kings anywhere else, I am still happy to invite.
Kind Regards

Roland

I think you should move (i.e. bid 3). But originally, i would open 1 NT.

And other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?

This hand is a perfect example of why counting points and losers can not substitute for judgment. AKT8x ATxx xx Ax is WAY (WAY!) better of a hand than T8xxx ATxx AK Ax. Same points, same AKs, same losers. And I don't even have to be old to realize it.

Your nice judgement leads to 2 Spade +4 well done.

I had enjoyed the play in 4 spade, thank you.

What is the worst case scenario? Something like Qxx,Qxx,Qxx,xxxx opposite my hand? Oh wait, even then I may make 3 Spade.

Your example hand is even better then the one we hold, because it has stronger trumps.
But I guess anybody and his grandma will at least invite with
AKxxx, QJx, QJx,KQ and this hand is not stronger then the example hand.
Kind Regards

Roland

K&R evaluator has the hand at 16.25...

Mind you Josh's hand is up at 18.85...

Isn't 16.25 enough for an invite opp 8-10? :P

I guess I haven't mentioned but I would invite opposite 8-10. But why do you think that's what the raise was?

I agree all the points Josh has made so far. I was the 2 bidder at the table and I thought this hand was on the heavy side for a 2 raise. The bid could easily have been 3 HCP lighter.

Nice set of hands here. Has anyone run a sim?

For me, if playing constructive raises, I have to invite.

But if playing my "normal" raises and Bergen (so that resp doesn't have 4 card support on this sequence) I just wimp it and pass.
