I'm not really used to play DONT, but agreed to play it with a one time partner.

a good rule is, if you have 3 card support in
the suit: pass.

At matchpoints I would bid, since we could have a major suit fit that's as good or better than our clubs, and pairs that play other conventions like Cappaletti will find it. At IMPs all the 2-level contracts are close enough that there's no point in looking for a major.

I would bid 2 ♦.

If I pass and they double for take out and the bidding comes back with 2 ♦ or 2 ♥ from rho, what do I do? Missing a 5/4 spade fit? Bidding 3♣ ?

So I bid and hope to know partners second suit before they can show their suit.
If he has spades, we can compete higher, if not, we can stay low.

And I like DONT, it is easy and there is no need for peanlty doubles over strong NT anything else is a matter of taste.

EZ 2D. Parnters suits could be equally long or equally one could be longer with (54). One time I might hit partner with my 4 bagger, so it's clearly right to bid.

2♦. There's essentially nothing do go on as far as which of partner's suits is longer, so with no shorter suit of your own, you have a better than even chance of finding
1) a major (they pay more, even at IMPs), or
2) a fit with your long suit.

Don't be too sure about that. Playing Cappaletti, with a moderate 5-4, if partner doesn't like your first suit, he's got to be willing to play at the 3-level, possibly on a 7-card fit.

Dislike bidding DONT with shorter length in the lower suit because of exactly this hand.

Yes, and it could have been the other way round.

Sry, if you care about finding your best fit, than DONT
is not for you.
DONT ensures only, that you reach a sensible fit most
of the time.

Those who hate dont because it doesnt show wich suit is longest might like to try SOFA.


X = 5M + other suit.
2C = 5C(6C) + 4M or both m
2D = 5D(6D) + 4M
2M = natural.

its imo a big improvement over dont.

the single suit M are direct instead of delayed. While the 2 suiters with a 5M are delayed. This is a small imrovement.

You now make the difference between 54,55 & 45,46 but you lose the single suit minor at the 2 level wich is a an excellent trade-off.


Ps you have to bid 2D at MP is not close at all.
