I remember back in the good old days, when we started bombing OPEC countries because of the 1973 price increases

Is the point of the MPG change to lower carbon emissions or to reduce oil consumption, and thus dependence on foreign oil?

I don't understand why we should worry any longer about dependence on foreign oil when we as just as dependent of foreigners buying our debt so we can afford to overindulge on gas-guzzling SUVs and pick-em-up trucks.
