If you think the US is going to sit still for some other country imposing a tax on our gasoline, you're dreaming. No country would sit still for that.

Is the point of the MPG change to lower carbon emissions or to reduce oil consumption, and thus dependence on foreign oil?

I don't understand why we should worry any longer about dependence on foreign oil when we as just as dependent of foreigners buying our debt so we can afford to overindulge on gas-guzzling SUVs and pick-em-up trucks.

I had no problem recognizing your sarcasm. My problem was that it pretty clearly was directed at me. If you meant to direct it elsewhere, you screwed up.
