East a whole lot.

East has an atypical preempt. (Much to good in my book, if you want to preempt with the hand, bid 4♦.)

That aside, when West bid 4♣, it is mandatory for East to bid 5♣, showing that 5♦ is bid to win.

West gets a little blame. Double can hardly cost a lot, and they will often be -2 or -3. (-5, like here, should be very unusual, as partner should not be able to have the actual hand.)

We should always assume 2/1 unless otherwise stated, because:

- If the original poster didn't bother to state his system, that means that he thinks it's obvious what he's playing. The only people who think this are 2/1 players.

In ATB problems the original poster gets the blame, so these are always exercises of "find out where I was seating" :)

In this case author has the gift of ubiquity, since he clearly was seating in both W and E seats :)

If you play a style, where 3 Diamond can be something like xx,xx,QJTxxxx,xx and the given hand, you must live with some randomness. (Sometimes with some random mess).

When you play against oppos who tend to bid 1 ♣ X and 5 ♥ with their hand, you have to live with even more rondom results.

Besides these points:

When you decide to bid a preemptive 3 ♦ and here 4 ♣ from your passed partner, which must be a slam try( - what else?), you should redouble to show your first round club control and your big maximum for your bidding so far.

As East: Why on earth did you decide to bid 4 ♣? Lets say, you know your partner and his preempt style, so that a slam is possible. Then bid id after 5 ♦.
Or did East think that 5♦ is a minimum?

I had doubled 5 HEart just for the sound of the bidding.
Kind Regards

Roland
