Scoring: MP

I found this deal from last night amusing.

West, playing her third or fourth game of bridge ever, opener 1NT because she had 16 HCP. North, my partner, doubled to show a one-suited hand (Brozel -- his idea). My wife, West, bid 2, aparently having thought it a good idea to introduce transfers to a person who had played bridge two or three times earlier.

No alert.

So, now I as South had a problem. What the Heck was going on? 2NT seemed somehow right, and I bought the contract.

Of course, 5 is cold. This sucks. Anyway, I got a heart lead. With a 3 1/2 table movement, in THIS club, it seemed fair for me to play for one pair being in 6, down one. So, I counted my tricks -- six. Work to be done.

The obvious winning line is to just attack diamonds. However, that's so normal. Instead, I decided to just cash my heart winner first.

When that happened, a lot of spades were pitched by RHO, convincing me that the layout in spades was something like it was. So, I decided to have some fun with the hand and at least see if I could achieve a humorous result.

After cashing the last heart, I played Ace and a spade, ditching the diamond Jack. RHO, my wife, bought it and switched to the diamond Queen, won by LHO. LHO also bought it and dutifully returned the diamond.

So, five hearts, one spade, and three diamonds, for 9 tricks.

Now to check the scoresheet. On had played the hand so far. 5X-1. Well, not exactly expected. I could have just cashed out for an average, but now I had anyone who defended spades undoubled for a one-trick set beat.

Yep -- top board.

Nice story! I guess I should play at the club more...

BTW, I think there was a typo: you say your wife was west, but East has all the spades...

Oh yeah. She had the spades. I might have the table tilted or may be just confused. The latter is very possible.
