It is the last round of a day-long round robin. You are lying in third place, 15 VPs behind second, with only two to qualify for the KO stages on the following day. Despite only 20 VPs being available, you are playing the bottom team and the top two teams are playing each other, so a maximum win may give you a chance of qualifying.

You reach this point in the auction. So far partner has shown a 16+ point hand, 2461 distribution, and four keycards in response to the 4♠ kickback for hearts.

Another slight complication is that you are playing a junior team and the player in the same seat as you started drinking about an hour ago.

What do you call (options do include asking for the ♥Q)?

The junior will fail to find the ♥Q and will go down in 7♥ if it is missing, thus giving you 14 IMPs. So I will ask for the ♥Q and hope partner doesn't have it.

I will ask and play 7 NT if partner does not have it.

If he does not possess the queen of hearts his hand will be

AJ,Kxxx,Axxxxx,A
or Ax,Kxxx,AJxxxx,A
or with stronger diamonds.
In the first case, I need to find the queen of hearts for 7 to make.
In the second I need to find the queen of hearts or play the diamonds via a finesse for 6 tricks.
When he has even stronger diamonds, 7 NT may be laydown without finding the queen of heart.

When partner has the queen of hearts, I would aks for the queen of Diamond if possible, else go for 7 HEart.

One option is not to ask for the ♥Q but just bid the grand. LHO may lead a trump, picking up the queen for you and, if not, then you could play LHO for the queen. This was the junior approach and it does have merit.

I asked and discovered partner did not have the queen. Now they are never leading a trump :). I think the best bid now is 6♦, looking for the grand in notrumps or diamonds. You will probably play in 6♥ as partner has ♠AJ ♥Kxxx ♦AJxxxxx ♣A.

I'ts so nice to finese West for ♥Q, but that won't be bery succesful if he has ♥10 as well.
