Who is or was Pearson, anyway? I know what his points are, and I first heard of the idea more than 20 years ago, but I don't think I heard them called Pearson Points until fairly recently.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Pearson = Don Pearson, Los Angeles area expert, I believe "was" applies. Played with John Swanson (Soloway's Bermuda Bowl partner in 1970s).

I pass, and think that even though it's clear it wouldn't take much more to make it an opener. It has terrible spots, short spades, random queen. Really I can't think of a single reason to open other than saying you would always have opened in other seats, therefore you open. That's as bad a rule on one end as requiring 15 pearson points is on the other end. This hand has medicore offense and defense so I'm letting it go.

I thought it was really, really close. It was the last hand of the evening, I took a minute and passed, and had contemplated taking another 3 minutes to see if I'd change my mind since there would be nothing else to do. Only pass-out with 9 tables (none of the 3 other hands a clear opener), I wanted to double-check if I was crazy. Pass turned out to be right double-dummy (we can make 2H, they can make 2S), and was worth 62.5% of the matchpoints. Who knows if it's right in general, switch some of the hands around and it could have easily been wrong.

So for the passers, how close is it to opening? One more jack somewhere? Two tens? Move the Q to clubs?

I'd pass, but my partner opens crap (as do I) when he has spades, even in second seat.
