On the first round I bid 1♠ or double, whichever is my agreed method with a four card spade suit.

Then 5♦ when 3♥ comes back. I don't like to double again with undisclosed 5 card support.

If partner has some junky hand with only one Ace, 5♦ won't make. If partner has 3 Aces and a doubleton spade we are probably cold for slam. But because I can't find out exactly what partner has, I just make the value bid.
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

I think the second double is positively awful. Anyone who makes the second double is SJ Simon's stereotypical unlucky-expert every time partner passes and they get 100 with a very easy game on.

I agree with Phil: 4♥

partner can work out that I have something close to this.

I show precisely 4 spades and no more than 4 clubs... with the values to now bid 4♥, I would have bid 2♣ initially with 4=5+ in the black suits. And I can't imagine bidding 4♥ with xx...that is the type of hand on which one is often best to double.

Note that if you are one of those players who, with Kxxx x KQx KQxxx, tend to double (arguing that one has to show one's spades) then this type of reasoning falls away... but that would be a mistake... akin to responding 1♠ had lho passed)

Yes, but isn't it a nice idea anyway? I mean: the alternative is for it to suggest a moysian, but it has to show willingness to play at least 4minor, so I think you have stumbled onto something.

I've seen similar 'solutions' in some of the old MSC's, but I don't know if this idea has gone beyond theory.

I still believe 3♠ would just show four really good spades. This is the type of auction even 5-year partnerships don't talk about.
