I think XX should show a 2-suiter (at least 5-5), not a 3-suiter on this auction. With a 3-suiter it just doesn't seem enough of a gain to risk raising the level to get to play a 4-3 fit. Here, with an ace an bad suits, passing seems clear to me.

Well, I'm mainly posting these because he was arguing for his bid each time, and they are more sanity checks for me... Anyway, on this one, I wasn't sure if I should redouble, maybe I should have just taken -800 and gone home? Anyway... Agree with Cherdanno. Very likely this hand has no eight-card fit, and redouble just risks playing at the three-level doubled instead of the two-level.

The hands where running is worthwhile are the ones with two five-card or longer suits, where the chance of finding a fit is fairly good.

Obviously opener should not pass out 2♥XX, but if opener runs I'd expect -1100 in 3♣X to be a typical result, obviously worse than the -800 declarer would've gotten in 2♥X.

I can solve the arguments.

2♥ vul on that balanced defensive piece of crap was bad.
Redouble with an ace and bad suits was bad.
Passing the redouble was hopelessly awful and shows he doesn't understand basic bridge.

Brutal. I guess I would have stuck it out. I have a trick and an entry for pard, which might be useful for finessing something through the doubler or shortening his hand.

I see nothing wrong with a weak 2 with pop's hand. I think anyone who says its wrong is resulting. 800 against their 3N isn't a disaster. If you xx he should pull to his fragment, but 3♦ looks very bloody too.
