signalling style ? discard from your bidded suit

You have bid and led spade. Declarer run a suit... If you discard a spade (low or high) is it attitude for spade or suit preference for the unbid suit based on the assumption that if youre spades are good you wouldnt discard them ?

My style is to always play attitude unless it is clearcut that suit preference is better.

A popular style is to play attitude in a trump contract, but suit preference in NT. I think this makes sense because:

* Often at trumps you want to discard in the suit you want.
* Often at notrumps you want to KEEP all in the suit you want.
Two wrongs don't make a right, but three lefts do!
