Both vul.
RHO deals and passes.

Your bid?

Tylere and I played yesterday in a local sectional. While we had a good (and enjoyable) game in both sessions, there were several problem hands that I'd like to present. This is one of them.

(If it matters, you are playing a 2/1 system with normally sound openings in 1st/2nd seats)

1 for me. However, playing sound openings, I'm leaning towards 3; but I don't open soundly so I don't run into this problem ;).

1 for me too. If I had shortness, I'd open 4, but I hate preempting 4 with 7222 and the hand isn't a 3 bid either.

3 . In this seat position, and at this vulnerability, partner will expect a decent hand for this call, so I'm not worried about missing anything.

I'll also go 3 at this seat and vul. I think most of my friends would be very surprised to hear me say that though.

Looked like a normal 1 bid to me. To Josh, the answer is yes.

That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

3 for me. I am red in 2nd seat and allowed to have this good of a hand and the KJ dblton is a clear defect as is 7222 so I just don't see this as 1 although it is close. If I get killed in 3x so be it, and at least the opps may have missed their 600 or 620.

I agree with the majority that this hand is 1 or 3 HEart.

With sound openers, 3 is fine, so I would choose this in a 2/1 context.
Kind Regards

Roland

If you open 1, do you realize that you do not satisfy the rule-of-20 even remotely?
(J is worth about 0 points). This is asking for lots of game contracts going down.

2 is asking for missed games. Partner will expect 1 full trick less.

3 middle of the road. I would open this even if I had 2 as 10-13 available.
Right on values if you ask me.

I just noticed those are 7 hearts. Well, that makes 3 a standout.

Tempting just to LOL this 'reasoning', but I will try to behave... :)

It didn't (doesn't) occur to me to consider this 'Rule of 20 TM' before opening the bidding. Is that very wrong of me?

Actually, I don't hate a 3 opening, but my (fairly strong) preference is for a 1 opening.

If you open 3, do you realize that you can go for 1400? OK, I am pretty sure that the 3 bidders did notice that they are 7222 with no spots, but judged to open 3 anyway. Fair enough, and that is how we decide what to open - we weigh the good and bad outcomes for each option, and make a decision. We (hopefully) don't just apply a silly Rule, and display shock when other people make a decision that differs from our Rule.

I'm ashamed to admit that I opened 4H for one of our few zero's.

Sorry Tyler.

I might. :)

Seriously, there is no "blame" here. I just think it would be beneficial for people to see the thoughts of others as to why 1, 2, or 3 hearts are all acceptable and reasonable bids (and possibly even pass), but it should never be opened 4H.
