Partner decided against asking for keycards. I have shown my strength and hold 8 loser in a ♦ contract. I need partner to cover 6 of them to make 5♦. His ♦ holding / length will help in ♦ and maybe I can drop some loser on ♠ so the contract might make, but trying for more is unreasonable.

I dislike the 3NT bid, partner can have ♣xx, 4♥ would had forced partner to make decide.


Now we need some imagination for finding out what partner has. I think he has ♥KQ, ♦KQ and ♣A. probably another club honnor as well. But we seem to lose at least 1♣ and 1♠ oppsite that. So pass.

(4) seems clear, but I wonder if at (7) we should have passed over 4C to find out what partner does next. Perhaps he might have redoubled to show particularly chunky clubs?

I assume we don't know what 4NT by partner would have meant over 4H? Because it's possible we want to play e.g. 6NT, rather than 6D if partner has

Anyway, over 4H partner denied the ace of spades, and denied the king of clubs. Yet he had enough to move over 3NT. What can he have?

It seems a guess where his 'spare' queen is, in hearts or in clubs (with neither he would have passed 3NT). Given the 3H bid, it is more likely it is in hearts - with AQ of clubs and Kxx of hearts, surely he would have raised diamonds immediately rather than bother with 3H?

By the way, you don't mention the form of scoring... at matchpoints there's less point playing this hand in 5D.

Pard's bidding over 3NT means he surely has some 18-19 hcp. A slam should have some play for.

6♦ is risky because if pard's club control is the king, it might be crossed through at the lead. Better 6NT. You're not going to setup spades by ruff anyway...

I wonder why Frances likes 3 NT.
In SEF partner had not shown a club stopp,er just 15+ balanced. So 3 HEart had been a question about clubs or an advanced cuebid. So I had to bid 4 Diamond, or 4 Heart to deny my stopper.

But things developed well, partner showed that 3 HEart was an advanced cuebid.

I had tried pass over the double, but anyway, now I bid 6 ♦. I am minimum for my 2 ♦ bid, but all my points seem to work great, so I give it a try.
