How optimistic are you? ...after 4S-X

Strangely, there were two quite similar problems last night.
Both times it went 4♠-X-pass-?

1. NV vs VUL
A, Qx, QJT9xxxx, xx

2. NV vs NV
Ax, KJT9xxx, Qx, xx

I'd take a shot at the 5 level in both, too. Yesterday I watched about 3 or 4 1♣-1♠-2♦ reverses in just 24 hands, amazing.

The idea of taking a shot to me is stepping up and bidding 6, and alas I have no balls. I think both are easily possible to take a lot of tricks, maybe all of them even.

On the second one I'd bid 4NT, hoping to be able to convert 5♣ to 5♥, showing a slam try. Then I'll wake up to find that partner has bid 5♦, I've bid 5♥, and partner has fatally lead a club against 5♠x.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

These are both 5.5 calls.

Agree with Edmunte on 2; 4N and then 5♥.

On the 1st I fear we are stuck with 5♦, but I could be persuaded to bid 6 on either of them.

I would go the 4NT route on hand 2. I think my hand is just good enough. I guess I should discuss with my partners more how much they need to move here. Is 2.5/3 keycards too much to ask for? Maybe.
