Scoring: IMP

1 - (2) - ?

Not too many viable options. So what's it going to be?

3H : wtp?

Sure it's a slight overbid but I have a decent 5 card suit, no wastage, and if both partner and LHO are short in S, partner can overruff...

How else do I convey 5(+) H with decent values...

regards

A lot of people pass on hands like this under the logic that if partner can reopen, then he has shortness, so the hand will play well, and if partner can't reopen, then he probably has 3 spades, so you probably aren't missing anything.

But this hand is too good, so this looks like an easy 3.

Double. 3 is too much with the death in spades. I also play it as GF.

Hi,

I would go with X, lets see p reaction, I wont
force to game, so 3H is out.

I like double the most, on my partnership I'd bid 3 wich shows hearts with unspecified strenght.

Another 3 bidder here.
A clear Dbl. without the 5th . I realize I'm forcing to game witch is far from certain, but dislike the ambiguity of X on the actual hand.

I go with this reasoning. As rogerclee hinted, pass is not far away, but as my hearts are solid, I stick my neck out.

The biggest problem with pass is, that if partner reopens with something else than double, our partnership is completely in the dark.

This may not turn out well for me but I will risk 3H. Dble could work out well of course, but it seems a little soft to pass and hope partner can re-open. The big issue there of course is partner holding 3S and we miss game.

For what it's worth, I felt it was close between Double and 3. I didn't view pass as an option.

In favor of 3:
- Shows your 5 card suit and will likely be the only way to find a 5-3 heart fit
- You have AQ, which is likely to fit well with partner's holding

In favor of Double:
- You don't really have a game force
- You probably want the contract played from partner's side

As it happened, I doubled and partner bid 4, which obviously made me happy.

Partner held:

Jx
