Here is the scenario A.

Washington D.C. is besieged by two snipers, who are killing people indiscriminately. They are killing 5 people per month and have not been caught for a year. 60 people have lost their lives to the snipers.

The police learn that the two snipers are parked in a highway rest area, but in a matter of minutes will disappear and will not be found again. There are also 10 other people in the rest area, all Americans, men, women, and children, and all innocent.

The Pentagon offers to drop a bomb on the rest area, which would definitely snuff out the lives of the snipers. The problem is that it would also snuff out the lives of the other 10 people.

Trick Question: Instead of being Washington D.C. this is actually Iraq, and the snipers are Iraqi insurgents and the innocent citizens are Iraqis. The U.S.A. decides to drop the bomb.

Scenario B.

The U.S.A. invaded Iraq on two premises - that Iraq had cooperated with al-Qaeda and that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Both reasons turned out to be false, making the U.S. an aggressive invader of a nation rather than a defender of itself.

Iraqis who fought against the invaders of their country are labeled insurgents and terrorists and are killed as encountered.
