Scoring: IMP

S - pass
W- 1Cl
N - dbl
E - pass
S - ?
if u bid 1S and next round u intend to bid dia then it will create the false impression that u have a 5 card S suit + dia
if u bid 1D and opps bid something what do u intend to do next round?

S - pass
W- 1Cl
N - dbl
E - pass
S - 1D
W - 3Cl
N - pass
E - pass

now what?

no, if you bid ♠ and then ♦ you give the right impression that you have 4♠ and 5-6 ♦, because with 5 spades you'd insist on spades, knowing that you have a fit there (i.e. partner should "never" double on a doubleton major). now that you started with 1♦ it is quite impossible to do anything. This situation is more or less exactly why you should always bid your major first. Only with a 7-4 should you think about hiding your major.

Also if you have 4-4 in the majors, it is a good idea to bid ♠ first and then ♥ to let partner give preference at a comfortable level.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Neither 1♠ nor 1♦ looks right. Staring down the unexpected club stiff, with two Aces, a Jack kicker, and 5-4 in two suits that are probably supported, and a lot of body (A9 OK, A109 great), I'd cuebid 2♣, myself.

And we ask police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and citizens to enforce or abide by it? The legislature continues to write unreadable statutes. Gibberish should not be enforced as law."

You have to bid spades as gwnn explains, but this hand is much too strong for 1♠. Either 2♠ or 2♣.

Of course 1♦ wasn't right but we are kind of lucky it went this way. Balancing 3♠ seems like a fair description at this point.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

I agree. I would have started with 2♠, but whatever...
