Might have bid 1NT the first time... I think I'll pass now. Partner had a 2 bid available that he didn't use. xx Qxx Qxxx AJxx is a reasonable 3 bid here. 3 is a close second choice...

Edit: I'll bid 3... Opposite most free 3 raises 3NT or 5 has a decent play...

3N, we could have 9 opposite the DA and out. I considered 3S but it seems like there's too much chance partner has no spade stopper and we still have 9 tricks.

I bid 3 at table. My wish was that he could bid 3nt with some half stop structure like Qx, Jxx, otherwise he could bid 3 to allow me to bid 3nt.
Was this too imaginary?

Yeah too imaginary, it would be good if everything was about spade stops, but the problem is you might belong in hearts. So if you bid 3H that would show hearts, partner would bid 4H with a fit and usually 3N with a spade stop and 3S with no spade stop (so that you can get to the right spot when you have a spade stopper and 4H and a 2D overcall).

The problem with 5 is that partner is not marked with spade shortage since the spades were not raised. I'm a 3NT bidder too- 5m is asking too much of partner's hand.

RHO might have 5 good spades and A, but such is life. 3NT is the bid.

Agreed.. we can reasonably hope to run 9 tricks... Axxx in diamonds makes that a heavy favorite... and most layouts where we are off a diamond trick will fail in all games, while many layouts with 6 diamond tricks can't develop 11 winners in time for 5 to be good. I would put partner's spade holding at 2-3 cards.. I'd expect 4 more frequently than I'd expect 1.
