Scoring: IMP

2♦-ps-ps-dbl
ps-2♥-ps-ps

2♦=weak
This is a hand in today's cayne match. Any thoughts about EW bidding?

2H is ridiculous, 3H is really an obvious bid. Easts bidding was debatable and other options are reasonable, but it's certainly a reasonable way to bid his hand.

I second the LOLman :)... I think 3♥ is certainly the correct bid here, and I can certainly understand wanting to balance with the east hand.

Hi,

I dont like X, I prefer 2S, and if you have made the X,
than you have to bid again.

With kind regards
Marlowe

PS: Having read the comments 2H vs. 3H: I think it is a
matter of partnership agreement, how much leeway you
want to give partner for the t/o, I think the 2H bis is based
on a max., but I would say, it is still in range.
With kind regards

I prefer 2♠ with the east hand. West really had a very clear 3♥ bid on the actual auction

I also prefer 2♠, however after a balancing double, I think WEST has a reasonable 2♥ bid. If you respond to balancing doubles like direct seat takeout doubles, you either will over bid too often, or your partner will sell out too often.

East has enough to make a move over 2♥, so game could still be reached, but he should have bid 2♠ and carried to game when WEST raises, so I blame EAST

If you respond to balancing doubles like partner is always light, you are basically saying we play 2h here is 0 to 10, and to me this is just too wide a range. I would always rather play methods that force me to bid too much than too little.

I also prefer 2♠, but I agree that 3♥ might be better with West's hand. Also, extended-lebensohl might help, too.

Prefer 2S to double. After the X I hardly think 2H is ridiculous. I think it is perfectly reasonable.

Well, let's not forget if pard were a bit stronger, say,

Axx
KQ876
Kx
Txx

he would have overcalled 2♥. So a jump to 3♥ after the balancing double can hardly be considered an overbid.

Whereagles pinpoints a probable reason for the difference of opinion between JLOL et al, and the_HOG & co. As P_Marlow says, it is a matter of style. For example, Some require sound values for immediate action but stretch to protect -- For us this is a "Transferred King" auction. I agree with Hanoi5 that Lebensohl might help.

I also would prefer to bid 2S but will not have any bad feelings about dble. 2H to me is an underbid, transferred K theory or what ever, one does not respond only 2H IMHO. I do not understand why lebensohl does not apply here and perhaps the t/o dble hand felt that way also. If this was the case they can hardly be faulted for passing 2H.

I thought the "transfer a K" theory does not apply over preempts? Did I learn this wrong?
Trying to learn, I have many questions.

I don't know what you mean by blame here. I wouldn't have doubled or bid 2♥, but the final contract seems perfectly reasonable. Game is playable but very tight.

I also would have balanced with 2♠ rather than double.

I find the 2♥ call to be perfectly reasonable.

As for a direct action over 2♦ holding Axx KQ876 Kx Txx, that is somewhat debateable. I like my direct actions over preempts to be better than this, but it is close.

If DBL, then 2H is underbid and 3H is overbid. Solution: Lebensohl 2NT rolling out to 3H.

After DBL, 2H under bid, 3H over bid, Lebensohl rollout (2NT then 3H) just right.
