Steve Robinson reported in email recently that Peter Boyd has won the 2009 Sidney Lazard Jr. Sportsmanship Award.
I don't know Peter personally, but I have played against him a few times and I have kibbed him several times, including once when his team played Apollo's team in the local GNT playoffs (Peter's team eked out a close victory).
The guy is a true sportsman and gentleman, a consummate professional and a credit to our game.
The Sportsmanship Award was established by Sidney Lazard in honor of his son, Sidney Jr., who died in 1999 at the age of 41 after a year-long battle with cancer. Administered by the ACBL Educational Foundation, the award is given annually to a top-level player, one who has scored a high-level finish in a major national contest. According to Lazard, the object of the award is to enhance sportsmanship among the top players and to salute those who try to win with class and dignity.
Previous winners of the Lazard Sportsmanship Award include Paul Soloway, 2001; Rose Meltzer, 2002; Larry Cohen, 2003; Lynn Deas 2004; Nick Nickell 2005, Ralph Cohen 2006; Semone Deutsch, 2007 and Georgio Duboin 2008.
