Matchpoints, red vs. white. RHO opens 3 (natural, preempt). What is your plan holding:

3. If I'm going to get in the pot, I want to show my suit. I'm not planning to get happy unless partner does something fancy.

Pard may be long in clubs, so we gotta get in now. Prefer 3.

Close decision again, I like 3 the less, I like to use xxx to ruff (might be overruffed ouch!), so I prefer double.

But with a stiff Queen this hand is clearly below my standars to double, I would pass.

Pass, although knowing it is very likely our hand...

I don't have a strong preference between 3 and double. I don't even think that pass is terrible, but it's not for me. Probably double is safest. I double.

IMO _P = 10, _X = 9, 3H = 8
Even at pairs, I prefer sound immediate actions over pre-empts, especially at adverse vulneraboility.

To clarify my position, although I agree that the short club hand should try to take action, I am also aware that my partner will assume a better hand than this for direct 3-level action and will put us in an unmakeable game way too frequently when he holds a 10-11 count.

If he has the hand to produce game opposite my hand, hopefully he won't sell out to 3C.

pass. If you can make 3H youll be in 4. If you can make 4H partner is likely to find a bid.
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

At the table, the person with this hand bid 3.

Partner held:

Qxx
Txx
KQxx
KTx

and found an unbelievable (to me anyway) pass. The 3 contract failed by a trick (losing a club, two spades, a spade ruff, and the trump queen) for -100 and a near-top.

Bidding 3 opposite a normal partner who goes to game on those cards gets you -200. Doubling gets you to 3NT which is also -200 if you cash out (worse if you don't). Passing was the true winner this time, netting a nice +50.

I dont find pass that unbelievable. Flat hand no ruffing value, and probably wasted king of clubs. Partner may have streched to act with shortness. I would like to defend with this hand.

I might bid 3NT, at IMPS but would give some consideration at passing.
Thats why double would work better from partner, so you will have maybe easier time now;)

3 with the OP, I'd be more likely to double with a small singleton in clubs since that ups the chance of partner having a penalty pass.

Pass. Surprised to see the votes. Certainly prefer X to 3, but both are overbids.

Pass over 3 is auto for me. Bidding very conservative 3rd-level overcalls and then expecting pard to raise with hand like this is not winning bridge.

The Q is waste paper, but a stiff in opener's suit is fine. So I pretend I have xxx AKxxx Axxx x.

For me a two level overcall should be Rule of 20 with 2 quick tricks and a three level overcall should be a queen stronger. This hand is Rule of 20 with an extra quick trick and a proven stiff--these are at least equivalent to the needed queen.

Passing 3 on partner's hand seems automatic given these minimums.

Passing 3 looks normal. You have a working 7-count without a ruffing value. This is approximately what partner will have played you for already.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn
