What now?

This was on BBO with pickup, what's your bid after partner jumps to 3C?

4, I am afraid if I bid 3 p will raise on xx or maybe even a singleton. After 4, p can still bid 4 if he has three of them.

Pard has a big one-suiter in clubs. I don't want to force the issue. I bid 4.

I am bidding a natural and forcing 3.

Partner won't raise to 4 with xx while also holding good stoppers in the red suits.

Only if partner has some 2=1=3=7 or 2=3=1=7 (or possibly 2=2=2=7) will 4 be likely to be significantly inferior to 4.

If partner's suit was diamonds (and my minors were swapped) I would bid a natural and forcing 3. Here I think that bid should show better spades since we can bid 3 (which is what I'd do).

3 for me. I think 3 now will lead to (a few) too many lousy spade contracts. But it's not a bad bid either.

But you are forcing the issue - 4C is forcing.

3S is the least bad bid in my view. Even if partner has xx he won't bid 4S except as a last resort. If partner's spades are anything other than xx, 3S will usually work out OK.

I agree

The most probable game is 3N

The second most probable game is 4

The least probable game is 5

Indeed, I venture to say that there will be very few hands on which 5 makes without bringing in the spade suit... and since we have no red entries, and short clubs, that requires partner holding some help for us in that suit (or a very lucky lie, which will be at least as helpful in spades as it is in clubs).

Put another way: if partner bids 3N over 3, we are going to be delighted.. that club Q will be invaluable.

And he can't bid 3N over 4... nor will we find 4 on a 5-2 fit.

I told myself I wouldn't respond to bidding questions LOL.

3. Sure I'd like 6, but I think this gives us the most options without misleading partner.

Pass is strangely appealing.

But even that is an underbid. You either open 2NT or rebid 3NT.
Kind regards,
