I think the double was not as bad as most say. We all know that LHO did pass over our bid. But I really doubt that you have a convincing way to come to your heart fit if he did not.

When the bidding starts with
pass 1♦ 2 ♣ 2 ♠
3♣ 3 ♦ 4♣

I would be surprised if anybody has a agreement that 4 ♥ now shows 4 Hearts and how strong this bid should be.

OTOH if the bidding develops around
pass 1♦ 2 ♣ 2 ♠
3♣ X 4♣ pass(?)
pass 4♦ we had paint a quite accurate picture of our hand.

Of course I can say that there is no way that I want to play in hearts ever, then there is no need to double. But I would not underwrite that POV.

Anyway, now I have a "clear" 4 Diamond bid. My hand is good, but obviously not good enough to go on after the expected 4 Heart from partner.
