I think: Win the spade queen, club king, diamond to the king (and if this holds..), small club pitching a heart. If the diamond to the king loses I will follow the same plan but I'll finesse the diamond jack.

I have no problem with south's upgrade. North's 3NT is strange.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

I agree with Han's line... I also have no problem with South's upgrade, but why isn't North bidding NMF or XYZ etc...?? Surely you must have some convention of this sort available. You will still wind up in 3NT, but at least now you have checked for a fit. (4♥ is actually an excellent contract, but I see no reason to favor that over 3NT, because without partner's 9♥, 4♥ is actually a terrible contract...)
