South opens 1S (5card major); West overcalls 2H
This is North's hand
S = 764
H = J
D = 3
C = AJT86532

I'm not particularly interested in playing this hand in spades though of course it could be right.

I think this is crazy. How can't we be interested in playing in spades?
Now if I only knew what to bid......
I guess I'll go game if this is IMPs. And I'll start with 3♣ and support spades later.

Yeah I feel you're right now after thinking about it for a bit.
Can't get rid of many of partner's losers unless he has club support, most likely....
Still don't know what to do though.

I understand 3C but I don't think that you can make a sensible decision later anyway, so I would bid 5C immediately.
Edit: what Han said.

2nd is 5C a better contract than 4S ? Maybe, maybe not. Im not willing to gamble on this.
I think bidding 2S and bidding 4S over 4H will show 3/4 card supports short heart and extras distribution. This a a fair description of my hand.
Bidding 3S has a lot to offer too if it could help partner to know what to over 4/5H but its not so clear.
I prefer 2S.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

I prefer the other unthinkable course of action - hiding the ♠ fit. 5♣ is perhaps a better bid, but I start with 3♣.

How many of my ♠ loser are covered by partners 1♠ bid?
My hand is stronger in ♣ so the choices are 3♣, 4♣ or 5♣.
Since 4♣ might have a different use, I can't use that with a pickup partner.
So I overbid in 5♣.

/*Even though maybe we could do a bit of masterminding, over
1♠-(2♥)-3♣
3♠-4♣
4♠
or, to a lesser extent,
1♠-(2♥)-3♣
4♠
it's quite clear that 4♠ should do better than 5♣.
There are numerous problems with this approach:
-partner may overbid to slam a good portion of the time when 5♣ was making
-opps get a free ride to finding their fit when they have a fit, maybe they were the ones who have slam!
-masterminding is wrong, 8 card suits are trump, and another one or two adages here.*/
