Scoring: MP

RHO (East) starts the following auction:
1 - 1 - ...pass - 1NT
pass - ?
(West is a beginner, and hesitated a little bit before passing)

- Do you agree with 1?
- What now?

Hi,

I am not sure, 1S is fine, but what is the alternative?
I pass now.

The fact that West did hesitate does not matter.

With kind regards
Marlowe

I rebid 2. The spades look really poor, but the problem with playing in 1NT is that you won't ever be able to set up the spade suit. Partner is more likely to have 2 spades than 0 or 1, and you will usually make more tricks in 2 than 1NT (in my opinion anyway).

If you believe that the hesitation might be because LHO has some spades, you might pass on that basis - though LHO's hesitation could be any number of reasons.

1 is clearcut, and I would pass now. The basic plan is to take enough tricks outside spades.

I'm sick, I know, but I would have bid 2 immediately. The downside of having a poor enough holding to warrant LHO in considering a lucrative pass/pass is outweighed, IMO, by the fact that an immediate 2 overcall of a minor opening leads to more good MP results than any other single call, IMO. I have a real hard time passing up any opportunity to jump to 2 if it is even remotely plausible.

1 is fine, now pass.

I can see the merit of Ken's argument, but I think it is pretty interesting whether the fact that LHO is a beginner has some bearing on what to bid.

Agee with 1, pass now.
We should be able to come to 6-7 tricks outiside spades, and I DO have a late spade stopper. :)
Kind regards,
Harald
