Hi,
This question I thought was more suitable in the BI forum, but I'd appreciate the expert's view on what I (hope to) think is a simple matter:
Consider the constructive auction:
1♦ - 1♥ - 4♥
What is a typical hand for 4♥? Would a 2=4=5=2 19-count qualify, or is it reserved for shapely minimums?

Part of the question concerns what other options Opener has. Typical other options would include a splinter of 3♠/4♣ and a "fit jump" of 4♦ (6-4 type of raise). 4♥ would then tend to deny a hand appropriate for these calls. 4♥ could also be a freak bid, something like 6-5 where Opener was planning a 1♦...♥...♥ sequence.

Typically, the raise of responder's 1 of a major to game shows a balanced or semi-balanced 18-20 HCP hand with 4 card support for partner's major.
Some partnerships play that the 1m-1M-4M sequence shows playing strength rather than high-card strength, and they have other sequences to show the big balanced 4-card raise.
For example, if you play the sequence 1♦-1M-2♣ as artificial and strength showing, you can create many different ways for raising partner's major suit response to game. 1♦-1M-4M can mean playing strength, while 1♦-1M-2♣-2any-4M can show the balanced strong hand with 4 card support.
Some partnerships play that the 1m-1M-4M sequence shows playing strength rather than high-card strength, and they have other sequences to show the big balanced 4-card raise.

I had a director call about this...auction there went (P)-P-(P)-1♦-(P)-1♥-(P)-4♥. They were shocked when opener didn't have a pre-emptive hand.
I play the first one 1st-2nd hand, and either of them 3rd-4th hand (giving up on slam). I would never use it as pre-emptive.

4th hand only has 1 preemptive call - PASS.
Still decidedly intermediate - don't take my guesses as authoritative.
