The idea behind gPhone is that by running on an open-source platform it will be easier to develop new applications for the phone. This might be true in the long run. But most people have to change cell phones every few years in any case. So buying a phone based on applications that may or may not materialize in a few years seems like a wrong approach.

not to mention it is likely easier to develop virus-like software for the thing.

My iPhone3g is great, except if you have all the features turned on, and if you have downloaded lots of their really great apps, the battery will last you about half a day. If you turn everything off and don't use "fetch" at all the battery will last for a couple of days with normal use. But sometimes even with all turned off the battery just goes down.
I also am having trouble getting started with their Mobile program.
hmmm, my daughter-in-law works for Apple, is Product Manager for iTunes, hope she doesn't read this.

Now, if I could get a PAYG phone that didn't require a minimum monthly purchase to keep going, and actually was PAYG, for the 10 minutes of calls a month I'd want it for (checking on buses, getting the odd message), I'd be all for it.

I searched and searched on my guitars, but I didn't find it. No-one can do without a G-string.

While I don't think there's true PAYG, Virgin Mobile is about as close as I think you can get. The normal rate to keep it going is $20 every quarter, but if you let them automatically charge your credit card it's down to $15/quarter, only $5/mo. They charge 25 cents/min for the first 4 minutes in a day, 10 cents/min beyond that, so depending on how spread out your calls are, 10 minutes will cost $1.60-2.50.
I originally got it because I needed a cellphone when I go to Nationals, to contact friends to arrange bridge partnerships or find people to go to dinner with. Outside of Nationals my credit on the phone tends to accumulate, but I usually use it up during Nationals, so it works out well.
