Does anyone understand the masterpoint awards for ACBL tourneys?

In the last one I played (fri 11 pm speedball) there were two pairs in the same section with one finishing first and the other finishing second, and they received the same award (no they did not tie, they had different percentages).

It also seems that even though every section has the same number of pairs, the winners receive very different point awards. And it doesn't seem to be based on "overall" awards because there are examples where the pair winning one section with a lower overall score got more masterpoints than the pair winning another section with a higher overall score (even with both sections having same number of pairs).

This happened in the last one I played in, as well. In that case, the pair that was 1st in the section was 1st overall in A and the pair that was 2nd in the section was 1st overall in B. I assumed that they both got the maximum award allowed.

But, there were other awards, like the ones you mention, that had me baffled.

It is really not that difficult once you understand that there are three fields - A, B and C.

Everyone is in the "A" field - it is the open game. The award for first place overall is 2.00. Lesser overall awards are fractions of the first place award - 75% for second overall (1.50), 75% of the second place award for third place (1.13), and so on.

Section awards: If the section is large enough (I think it has to be 14 tables or more), the section top in the "A" field is 1.20. Second in the section is 75% of first (0.90), third is 75% of second (0.68), and so on.

In the "B" field, the awards are the same as in the "A" field, except that "A" players are not included in the field.

In the "C" field, I believe that first overall is 1.60 and first in a section is 0.96. I am not looking at any results while I am typing this. Lesser awards are fractions of the award for first place (75% for second, 75% of second for third, etc.).

If the section is not large enough for an award of 1.20 for a section top, the awards go down in increments of 0.08. So, if I have it right, a section top in the "A" and "B" fields for a 13 table section would be 1.12, a section top in a 12 table section would be 1.04, and so on.

Pairs get the highest award that they are eligible to receive, whether it be an overall award or a section award.

"B" and "C" flight pairs get the higher of their award for their own flight or the award earned for any higher flight. So, if a "C" flight player gets the best score its 15 table section among the "C" flight players, that pair earns 0.96. But if it also earns a better score than all of the "B" flight players, that pair earns the section top for the "B" flight, which is 1.20, instead of the section top for the "C" flight, which is less.

Pairs that tie for two or more positions get the average of the award that they would have received for each of the tied positions.

Thank you very much.
