Partner opens 1 and you respond unopposed with this roughly "invitational" hand:

1-1
2-?

Your rebid.

Diamond suit often gets lost in this 2/1 style.

I guess 2 is reasonable if partner can have a 5-4 10 count, but then this hand isn't invitational. I'm assuming "standard" openings, say a minimum of 12 points unless you've got some nice shape.

Game often gets lost when you underbid by a king.

2 would still be a bit of an underbid even with AJxxxx x K10xx xx. I think I'd bid 3 with that.

On the originally posted hand, I'd bid 3, planning to bid game in diamonds unless I heard of spade support.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

So apparently the hand I gave was too good and almost everyone forced to game.

I guess my real question was what to do with the hand if you weaken it enough that you're unwilling to force to game (hence the "invitational" reference). For example,

AJxxxx
x
KTxx
Jx

or

KJxxxx
x
JTxx
Kx

Any more thoughts?

If a hand like this is not good enough for force to game (although this one probably is), you bid 3. I don't see this as much of a problem with lousy spades.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

Agree, with the original hand I'd force to game and with the 9-count I'd bid 3D. Make it AQJxxx x K10xx xx though and I'd rebid 3S.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Even for me this is a GF.

A little weaker, and I'd raise to 3.
Kind regards,

Show the fit and invite.

If 2S would show an inv. and 6 spades,
this would be fine as well, but I wont by
pass 3D to show a 6 card suit.
