Scoring: MP

(1)-X-(2)-P,
(3)-X-(P)-3,
(P)-3-(p)-?

What should partner's hand type be for this auction?

What is the difference between this auction and the auction where partner bids 3 hearts directly over 3 clubs?

Do you take any action with this hand, and if so, what?

Partner has a big hand with H. She may or may not have S as well, so I bid 3S on the way to 4H.

I think partner will have 3 or 4 spades, as he didn't bid 3 directly over 3 (the second double, then 3 should show a more flexible hand). Anyway, I agree with 3, partner should know this is exactly 4 spades.

Hard to imagine any bid but 3. If he has four spades I like my chances in 4, if not then 4 will often have good play.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

Partner has a very strong hand with hearts and some support for at least one of the other suits. With a heart single-suiter, partner would have bid hearts directly over 3C. Partner either has both majors (4-5 or 4-6) or is also interested in playing in diamonds (e.g. 3-6-3-1).

3H is not quite forcing but this hand is easily worth a bid. 3S seems obvious. It's not clear from our hand if we are best in spades, hearts or diamonds.

We might even be making overtricks in our final contract - try something like Axx AKQxxx AKx x opposite and all we need is trumps 2-2, or AKQx AKQxx A xxx and 6S is pretty good

Glad you read the hand so well. I actually held AQJx AKQ9x A JTx, but partner passed me in 3 hearts. I wanted to make sure that it was partner miscommunication rather than the sequence that was at fault.

On the other hand, no pair actually bid game on these combined hands in an open club game, so maybe it isn't as easy as I think it is.

If only my partners descibed my bad bids as partner miscommunication. Life would be better. :(

3 is perfect, followed by 4 over 4, if possible.

I had considered 4, as one of those fancy-schmancy choice-of-games cues, but I don't see why I can't have some heart support, short clubs and a card somewhere and not quite enough to find a call over 2.
