Playing in my local club last night, where were (at least!) two hands I had no idea of the 'right' action on:

1) Opponents are playing Vienna club, which was rather cool.

Scoring: MP

(1♠) - dbl - (1NT*) - ?

1♠ was limited to 18hcp (as 1NT is any 19+), 1NT was any 8-10.

2)

Scoring: MP

1♣ - (pass) - 1♠ - (2♦)
dbl - (pass) - 3♣ - (3♦)
dbl - (pass) - ?

We're playing 4 card majors (so 1♣ promises 4+) and a weak NT. We have no agreements as to if 2NT after partner's double is Leb, so 3♣ is nf.

♠ K865

1♣ - (pass) - 1♠ - (2♦)

dbl - (pass) - ?

We're playing 4 card majors (so 1♣ promises 4+) and a weak NT. We have no agreements as to if 2NT after partner's double is Leb, so 3♣ is nf.

1) 1NT is any 8-10 over the double? Assuming that this is accurate, I bid 2♣. This is not the same as 1♠ - Dbl - Rdbl - ?, in which case 3♣ would be preemptive. 3♣ here is still a strong call, and this hand is not worth a 3♣ call.

2) Was the double of 2♦ for penalties? If so, you have already pulled partner's double once. When he doubles again, he is saying "I heard you bid 3♣ and I am still doubling 3♦." Your hand is not terrible on defense.

I suspect that partner is 1-3-4-5 or 0-4-4-5. You may not have many club tricks on defense, but you do have a lot of red suit tricks on defense. If you make 3NT, you probably will get 500 against 3♦.

Even if the double of 2♦ was not for penalties, it is likely that 3♦x is your best spot. Partner could have bid 3NT if he thought that was right. He chose to double. You already told him that you had clubs when you bid 3♣. Your hand is not bad for defensive purposes, and it is about what partner should expect. I sit for 3♦x.

#1 3C, preemptive, competitive, trying to buy the contract
#2 the first double was for t/o or was it suppX? I guess t/o,
because of the Lebensohl remark.
I would go with 4C, not really convinced.

The opps really did play that 1NT was any 8-10... :)

Yeah, the first double is for takeout. Typically a strong NT.

You (OP) mention some points-limits.

Are you sure those points were not Vienna-points?:

Ace: 7
King: 5
Queen: 3
Jack: 1

Haven't a clue! They were certainly playing Vienna club, but I didn't ask what they meant by points (was alerted and explained after our auction as 8-10 points).

1S -X - 1NT
I assume the 1NT bidder doesnt have 3 spades. They probably have 2 .
So Spades are 5-4 or 6-3.
I assume pard has 4 hearts to go with 3/4 spades. Leaving 3-3 in the minors?
4-4- 2-3 / 3-2 is not a great take out double with a minimum hand.
Lets assume 3-4-3-3. With 3-4- 4-2/2-4 its risky unless playing Equal Level conversion.

2 Clubs leaves room for 2 hearts by the Opps. Maybe thats ok, since hearts will be 4-4 or 3-5 with pard having 4.

3 Clubs can buy the contract. Do we want that? IF pard has a club honor it can be ok.

I think 3 Clubs can be ok.

Pard made a support double, showing 3 spades.
Why is it a take out double?

His last double was penalty.
Pass.

1. 3♣ whatever it means, less is just wussy. In competition these bids are just bidding to the level you are willing to play.
2. 3NT, partner's third double is just extra values and I think passing is pretty nuts. Either partner has help, they don't lead it, they are blocked, whatever it takes I'll get since I'm a lucky guy.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

Is anybody else tempted to bid 4♣ on the first one?
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

I am.

If partner will not expect more, I find the bid obvious.
