Playing Standard American:
Partner bid 1 H, I bid 2 D.(showing 10+.) Partner jumped to 3 H. Is this wasting bidding space? I contend that my 2 D promises another bid, and he could have bid 2 H and described his hand with his next bid, as his 2 H would also be forcing, as I MUST make another call.

It's not wasting bidding space if it shows a hand, or some important feature of the hand, which couldn't be accurately shown at all by following the cheaper route, or would actually end up being shown at a higher level if the cheaper route were followed. One possible use for this sequence, for instance, would be to promise a solid heart suit.

Hi,

3H creates a game force, compare this to the seq.

1H - 2D
2H - 2NT
3H - ...

Now 3H could be passed.

As it is, 3H also showes a solid suit, setting trumps,
responder may still suggest NT (3NT) or diamonds (4D),
but any other bid agrees hearts and is a cue (5D / 6D
I will ignore).

So the jump does not waste space, it simplifies life.

At the core, I think that

1 - 2
3

and

1 - 2
2 - 2NT
4

Should mean different things. Sure, both are game forcing, but having 2 different ways to game force should show 2 different types of hands. Making redundant bids descriptive can only help communication with partner, right?

The above explanations seem reasonable to me as to specifics.

Still decidedly intermediate - don't take my guesses as authoritative.
