Scoring: IMP

P-(P)-P-(1♥)
P-(2♥)-P-(P)

Hand from the Juniors BBO tournament today on which I thought the mentors gave some bad advice.

What do you think?

I'd bid 2♠, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else.

Pass

Who says they have an 8-card fit, and even if they do, we could still be going for a number. Remember that partner, with the supposed "heart shortness" didn't bid over 2♥.

Partner didn't know that 7 of your 10 points weren't with your RHO. I'll go out on a limb and say they have an 8-card fit.

Pass wtp? Bidding is huge downside, small upside, this should be trivial at imps with so much in hearts. Not only could they possibly have a 7 card fit (and surely not 9, at least on a hand where you would want to be bidding if partner didn't act over 2♥), but even if they have 8 you do not have a guaranteed fit.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

With only CK over opener, I expect all partner's tenaces/quacks to be under opener. So even half the deck won't be taking 7+ tricks. Then to avoid 3D on partner's choice to reopening double. Pass this one.

Pard couldn't act in third or over 2H when he has the presumed heart shortage. Pass in sleep

Pass. It is partners responsebilety to protect here. (In the pre-balance seat.)

Tougher at MP's where +50 might suck, and opponents are more likely to bid again.

Hi,

Pass.

We are red.
Partner is a passed hand, i.e. we have at best half of
the pot, it is more likely we have less.
We have AK in their suit.
And for me not really relevant, but also a big factor:
We are playing IMPs, which means, if we go in, and since
we are red, we may trade -110 for -500 or more, but the
previous reason, would make balancing even at MP
problematic.

If you bid, it is double, this will at least ensure, that
you play your best fit, maybe spades, but maybe clubs
as well.

With kind regards
Marlowe

South might have doubled 2♥.

South has a painfully obvious double :( Did the mentors say N should bid 2♠ lol?
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Pass. There is no game here. Any action could lead to a disaster.

Most of my partnerships would duplicate this result. A double by the South hand into a live auction is very dangerous.

Looks more like a painful double to me, with a 10-count opposite a passed hand and with a virtually unlimited LHO (ok, he didn't open 2♣). North is the one who knows his partner has his fair share of the missing points. The 2♠ balance has some risk, and certainly isn't ideal, but I still like it.

Though going for a number (even if that number's "only" 500) is a bigger disaster at IMPs than matchpoints, that danger is reduced by the opponents' being less likely to double a low-level contract at IMPs (no "matchpoint doubles" where they know they're getting a bad score if the contract makes, anyway).

If the story of the hand were that south doubled with his 10-count and partner got his head handed to him in a 4-3 club fit at the three level, I wonder how many voters in an "assign the blame" poll would characterize the double as "obvious."
