This is a truly amazing deal from the Danish Cup recently.

Scoring: IMP

You have arrived in 6 after a nice auction, and West leads a diamond. When did you last see a balanced 18 count with no entry? You must hope for A to be onside (alternatively singleton ace offside), but no matter what you do, you won't succeed.

East had A9, so even if you tempt with the queen, he will duck, win the continuation and switch to a spade. Yes, K was with West. Down 1.

However, at both tables West led a spade. At one table a small one away from the king (no 10), so to make you must insert the jack. At the other table West chose a cunning K, which did not paralyse declarer.

Flat board.

And throw the A under the A, of course :(

If east has A9 and we misguess by playing a low spade, how about Q, Q, A, A, club. If east began with 2xx2 shape he's now endplayed.

I don't think this is better than flying J though.

Here's another thought: Low to the 7, instead of the K.

Versus low to the K, low to the 7 breaks even with all of the 2-2 splits, with the exception of A9 off. Both also work with A-9 x (x) onside and stiff 9/A on.

For the 3-1's, the relevant cases seem to be stiff 9 off versus stiff A off, which are the same.

Would you trade your table feel for one case out of 16?
