When I get hands like this I never know what to do, I know what I'm going to do but I doubt its the smartest thing.

I would bid 2. It's natural, it's NF. It normally shows 6. (So we have a spade more and touch less strengh) Seems ideal.

Absent agreement, it depends what bidding (or jumping) over the 1NT overcall means. If 3 is preemptive, it seems a reasonable call. But I'm not sure it is, in SAYC.

Let's say you play Cappelletti over an opposing 1NT opening. You could also play that here, in which case 3 is surely preemptive.

I have no idea what playing Cappeletti in this spot would have to do with the meaning of 3, but in any case I bid 3.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

Yes, 3. We're white against red, surely we can't bid any less than this.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

I think it is closer than the 3 comments suggest, because our void is in partner's suit... of course, rho has suggested that maybe partner's values are at least partially elsehere, so I also go with 3, but I don't mind a cautious 2 much.

I obviously should have acted but didn't, I was back playing my "wait and see" game. Bad bidding and partnership misunderstanding create some crazy results.

2S.

The important thing to understand is,
that every bid besides X is limited,
depending on agreement limited to 9
or 10 HCP.

You have 7 a card suit, go ahead bid it.

3S: It depends to a large degree on your
opening style, if you open sound, the odds
are high, that they dont have a game, after
all your side has +15HCP, and even given
the fact that declarer knows where to look
for the odds say, that it is a part score fight,
hence I am not going for a sacrifice, which
may not be necessary.

With kind regards

I'm not crazy about 3 spades on this, no matter what happened on the actual hand. The suit is marginal, and we have the death holding in two red suits where RHO likely has some stuff in. A void in pards suit is always a red flag too.

I do like it better than a pass however.

2 is fine, but I don't mind 3 at these colors. Pass is totally out of the question for me.

If I were to lead a heart, I'd lead a high one. I like Xxx against NT, and xxX against suits.

The bigger question that came to my mind reading this hand was, what was partner going to do if the auction had been unopposed and your first bid had been 1? I'm a 1 bidder with your partner's hand, followed by a 2 rebid.

Er - 1NT?
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

I don't like 1NT for a variety of reasons. The biggest reason pertains to finding 5-3 major suit fits. You'd also (presumably) rebid 1NT with something like:

QTx
KJx
ATx
K9xx

You could rebid 2 with that hand, but it's generally not a good idea to raise as opener on 3-card support without a ruffing value. So now, consider responder's problem with a minimum response and 5 spades after:

1-1;
1NT - ??

If you're rebidding 1NT with your 1-4-4-4 hands, partner has the unattractive options of passing 1NT and possibly missing a 5-3 spade fit, or bidding 2 and possibly playing a 5-1 fit. Ugly.

So I would suggest opening 1 with a minimum 1-4-4-4 hand, and rebidding
2.

In my regular partnerships, 1 - 1; 1NT denies a singleton. Now responder can rebid a 5-card spade suit in comfort, as a 5-2 fit plays about as well as 1NT, and a 5-3 fit plays better.
